7:30pm "Please Turn ON Your Cell Phones..." Yale Concert Band Season Opener

Yale Concert Band, Thomas C. Duffy, Music Director. Feat. Honeycomb by Cody Brookshire, in which the audience joins the performance through audio files mapped to their cell phones, enabling them to “play” in synchronicity with the live ensemble; Symphony in Bb (Paul Hindemith); Children’s March (Percy A. Grainger); Dance of the Jesters (P.I. Tchaikovsky); and a Leonard Bernstein triptych: Make Our Garden Grow (from Candide), Slava! and Almighty Father (from Mass).

7:30pm Yale Concert Band: "Ask the Sky and the Earth: An Oratorio Cantata for the Sent-down Youth"

Thomas C. Duffy, Music Director. Featuring “Ask the Sky and the Earth: An Oratorio Cantata for the Sent-down Youth”, with the SYGQ Chorus (Charles Lu, Music Director). With libretto by Wei Su, music by Dongling Huo (Tony Fok), and orchestration by Dong Yan, this magnificent piece – transcribed by Thomas C. Duffy – commemorates the 50th anniversary of the “sent-down youth” movement of China’s Cultural Revolution under Mao Zedong in 1968. Also featuring “Three Places in New Haven” by Thomas C. Duffy, Sam Um ‘18MMA, marimba.
