Ted Hearne to feature arx duo (Garrett Arney and Mari Yoshinaga, percussionists) in the world premiere of his new double percussion concerto, «In Thrall.» The work delicately weaves a complex texture of harmony and rhythm, demanding the attention of performer and listener alike.

H. Owen Reed’s «La Fiesta Mexicana» pays homage to Mexico’s relationship with Catholicism, depicting a religious festival devoted to La Virgen (the Virgin Mary). The three-movement piece encapsulates the many contradictions and simultaneities of such an event. It is both serious and comical, festive and solemn, devout and pagan, boisterous and tender.

William Grant Still was a leading musical figure of the early 20th century. Due to his close association with artists such as Langston Hughes, he is often associated with the Harlem Renaissance movement, and is the first African American to have conducted a major American symphony orchestra, the first to have a symphony performed by a leading orchestra, and the first to have an opera performed by a major company. His classical work, «Summerland,» originally the second of Three Visions (1936) for piano, is recast here for band. Calm and relaxed, the piece evokes a quiet, warm afternoon.

«The Magic of This Dawn» by Christopher Sainsbury takes inspiration from Jay Sigmund’s poem “Morning Mists on the Wapsipinicon”, which speaks to the dispossession of First Nations Peoples. Sainsbury draws on Sigmund’s regionalism and his own Australian Aboriginal heritage to pay homage to “the idea of the whole universe expressed in your own place”.

Additional repertoire: Ghost Walk (Chris Brubeck), Rhythm Stand (Jennifer Higdon),
Spring Festival (Chen Yi), Sweet Like That (Christopher Theofanidis)
